<p>How many more of our young, talented celebrities have to pass before our community wakes up to the fact that we have embraced one of the worst lifestyles on the planet. Diabetes, high blood pressure, lung and heart disease run rampant in the black community because we smoke, drink and eat all the wrong foods and refuse to walk any further than our parked cars.</p>
<p>We have lost record numbers of black men to drugs, prison, gangs and military warfare, and to see a rising star extinguished because of an unhealthy lifestyle deeply saddens and angers me. Patrice O&#8217;Neal died from a stroke and suffered with diabetes.  The onset of diabetes happens when there is too much glucose in the blood and not enough insulin to take the glucose from the blood to the cells, where it is used for fuel. Type 2 diabetes afflicts millions of Americans and is common in African American and Hispanic populations and most people don&#8217;t even know they have it. Type 1 affects children and young adults.</p>
<p><strong>Symptoms include:</strong></p>
<h3>Type 1 Diabetes</h3>
<ul>
<li>Frequent urination</li>
<li>Unusual thirst</li>
<li>Extreme hunger</li>
<li>Unusual weight loss</li>
<li>Extreme fatigue and Irritability</li>
</ul>
<h3>Type 2 Diabetes*</h3>
<ul>
<li>Any of the type 1 symptoms</li>
<li>Frequent infections</li>
<li>Blurred vision</li>
<li>Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal</li>
<li>Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet</li>
<li>Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections</li>
</ul>
<p>*Often people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms</p>
<h3>Race and ethnic differences in prevalence of diagnosed diabetes</h3>
<p>After adjusting for population age differences, 2007-2009 national survey data for people diagnosed with diabetes, aged 20 years or older include the following prevalence by race/ethnicity:</p>

<li>7.1% of non-Hispanic whites</li>
<li>8.4% of Asian Americans</li>
<li>12.6% of non-Hispanic blacks</li>
<li>11.8% of Hispanics</li>
</ul>

<p>Prevention is the key. Schedule a complete physical every year or every two years if you have insurance. <p><strong>CHANGE IS GOOD: CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS! </strong></p>
<p><strong>Reduce or eliminate processed foods and sugar from your diet.</strong></p>
<p><strong>EXERCISE</strong> <strong>30 minutes a day.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Stop SMOKING.</strong></p>
<p><strong>LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE</strong></p>
<p><strong>ELIMINATE  ALCOHOL COMPLETELY if you have DIABETES.</strong></p>
<p>Don&#8217;t let a stroke or heart attack claim your life before the golden years. The premature death of Patrice O&#8217;Neal should be a wake up call to everyone that we need to take better care of ourselves and each other. What we eat, drink, smoke and sedate ourselves with can send us to an early grave, leaving behind grieving children, parents, family and friends. So much so, Skechers has recently hired Kim Kardashian to pitch the brand while extending their style lines &#8211; they now have an all terrain version.</p>
<p>The bottom line is, do they work? Skechers states the benefits of the new toning shoe is to; burn calories, tone leg and butt muscles and improve posture.  In 2010, a case study was performed with eight women over a 6-week period by Dr. Steven Gautreau, D.C. in Manhattan Beach. The results indicate significant improvements in low back endurance and glutei (butt) strength. Measurements of overall body composition showed little change over the six weeks. The participants were asked to only wear the shoes and not to diet or start a new exercise program during the six week testing period. The average weight loss of participants was 3lbs.</p>
<p>Based on this evidence alone, men and women are running out to buy these shoes so they can have that Kim Kardasian booty. However, what Skechers is not telling anyone is toning shoes were not meant to be worn all day every day. A class action lawsuit has been recently filed against Skechers claiming the shoes can cause hip fractures when worn for extended periods of time.  Holly Ward, 38yrs old and a waitress in Ohio believes she fractured her femur(thigh) bones in both of her legs because of these shoes. Her attorney states the shoes are dangerous and attorneys for Skechers claim they have millions of customers who have not been injured but do not deny that Shape-Ups  <em>will change the way you walk.</em></p>

<p>Changing the way one walks can adversely affect the entire body. Wearing high heels places undue stress on the balls of the feet, over works the calf muscles and shortens your achilles heel tendon. Wearing Birkenstock  or &#8220;clog&#8221; shoes extends the achilles tendon and creates a new set of problems for the feet.  (See Img-2)</p>
<p>While there is scientific data to support Skechers claim Shape-Ups will help improve leg and low back strength. There is no evidence that it improves posture and there is no long term safety data available to support wearing the shoes for more than 6-8 weeks at a time. My advice:  While the verdict is still out, it may be wise to  wear these shoes for only a few hours a day for two months and then give them a rest for a few weeks. Then go out and pick up a pair of Skele- Toes by Fila and try some barefoot walking or try barefoot running in the hottest pair of Vibram&#8217;s Five Finger Shoes! As an Athletic Trainer,I am loving the barefoot concept.</p>
